Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
There were a number of fine advertisers who had been loyal to the old paper, who helped support us when we began in 2009.
Where did you find your first employee?
Our fine editor, Charles Sercombe, was a holdover from the former newspaper, The Hamtramck Citizen
Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
We don’t really use interns.
Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
The paper has been grown through its own self-sufficient stream of advertising revenues. The initial seed money was my own.
What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about opening a business here?
There is still plenty of opportunity for progressive and open-minded business minds in the metro Detroit area or the city of Hamtramck. Spend time here, and get to know the city and its surroundings, and more importantly, its people. See a niche that needs filling, and fill it.
What do you see in Metro Detroit that other people who live outside the area don't?
A city is only as good as its people. A lot of people still have a great affection for Detroit and the surrounding area. Many professional athletes, entertainers and others who come here end up staying. The Detroit area will surprise you.
