The latest and greatest in sign technology may not be the sexiest new economy headline, but it's an industry that's growing and creating jobs in Ann Arbor.
Estrakon develops, manufactures and sells LED edge-lit signs for businesses from its base on the south side of Ann Arbor. That energy-efficient technology uses 80 percent less energy than traditional light sources and contains no hazardous materials. It's also a technology that ages well.
"In 5-10 years they will never degrade," says Matt Shumate, CEO of
Estrakon
. "They will stay the same. It's a very robust technology."
Estrakon's LED signs are also in demand. In January it logged five orders for more than 2,000 signs made in Ann Arbor, competing in a market where Chinese-made signs are the norm. Shumate says his 7-year-old company's revenues were up 49 percent, allowing him to hire three people and grow his staff to seven. He expects revenues to jump 200 percent this year and hire another 11 people to keep up with demand of the firm's new clients.
"We have a little niche at the moment," Shumate says. "We do everything in-house, including R&D and manufacturing."
